Fools

"The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts."

I’m tired. I get home from yet another empty dinner and I wonder: what happened to simple authentic conversations? What happened to question marks and curiosity? To being open to diversity and to the ideas of others? These days it seems like everyone is so sure of themselves, so defensive, so ready to answer all the time, that it is difficult to have a simple fruitful dialogue. Concentration is close to zero. Intelligent pauses are out. Doubts and genuine awkwardness (that I such admire) only exist in Woody Allen movies. All I get lately are people that think that having a strong personality equals having a joke and a fast comment about everything and everyone. People that are so sure of themselves they only leave space to be sceptical of others.

Shouldn’t we want to change? Shouldn’t we want to grow and learn? Want to listen to whoever has a different opinion and another point of view? It seems to me as if stupidity is much more with the one who thinks he knows everything than with the one that doesn’t know but isn’t ashamed to ask. Curiosity and desire are the motors of growth. Passion always starts with a genuine interest in something or someone else. Just goes to show that the less interested you are in others, the less interesting you are yourself.

Questions anyone?
